Flea, Tick and Heartworm Prevention

Flea, Tick and Heartworm Prevention

Flea and tick prevention is important for a healthy pet. For dogs it’s essential, and even if you have a cat who is indoors, all it takes is for one person to track a flea into your house during the spring or summer and you can have a big problem on your hands, both for your household and for your pet. Sacramento is also a known heartworm area, so heartworm prevention for dogs is important as heartworm can be a fatal disease. At Campus Commons Pet Hospital, we stock a variety of flea, tick and heartworm preventatives and can help you choose a product that is best for your pet’s particular needs.

Flea & Tick Prevention

Besides being a pest, fleas can also be a human health hazard because they can transmit tapeworms to your dog or cat which can also infect you.

We recommend and provide a number of different flea and tick preventative products at Campus Commons, including:

• Trifexis – flea/heartworm combo for dogs
• Cherestin – topical flea medicine for cats
• Revolution – we carry the cat version only
• Comfortis – oral flea medicine for dogs and cats
• NexGard – chewable flea and tick for dogs only (our favorite for dogs)
• Bravecto – chewable flea and tick for dogs only (our second favorite for dogs)
• Advantage Multi – topical flea medicine for cats
• Seresto – flea collar for dogs

Heartworm

Heartworm is a disease that is carried by mosquitoes. Dogs are the primary target for contracting heartworm disease. Heartworm testing is recommended annually for your dog, plus we recommend heartworm prevention for your dog every month. Although the prevalence of this disease in Sacramento is nowhere near as bad as Dr. Patton’s home state of Mississippi, it is in Sacramento and the surrounding areas. Heartworm is a serious disease and it is life-threatening, even when it’s caught early enough to treat.

Heartworm Map - 2013

Sacramento is a higher-incident heartworm area.

For dogs, prevention of heartworm disease involves a once-a-month chewable tablet or topical medication. A physical exam and an annual heartworm test must be current. During your pet’s annual wellness exam, we can test for heartworm and then start your pet on a monthly preventative.

Cats are not the usual host of heartworms, but they can get also them. There is no reliable heartworm testing for cats at this time. We recommend using Revolution to prevent them in cats, which simultaneously also prevents fleas and other types of worms.

We recommend and carry the following heartworm preventative products:

• Trifexis – flea/heartworm combo
• Heartgard Plus – chewable heartworm prevention
• Revolution – we carry the cat version only
• Interceptor Plus – chewable heartworm prevention
